So you’ve got the details down. You can see it, smell it, taste it, feel it, and hear it.

Now what?

Well, so it goes, I’ve got another question for you.
“So, you want to be more successful in your career. Why?”

Huh? Why, you say? Well, I want to get a promotion or grow my business to be bigger and more profitable so I can provide a better life for my family and I.”

Ok, why?

“Well, I think it’s important to do that, and I want to give my kids more opportunities than I had growing up.”

Ok, that’s great! But why?

“Are you going to keep on asking this?”

“Yes .. (smiley face)  .. until we get to the root.”

“When is that?”

“When you can’t answer ‘why’ any further. So, why give your kids more opportunities?”

“Why not?”

“Look – I understand. But tell me specifically why. Why is that important to you?”

“I want my kids to have more opportunities than I had as a kid so they can do more and go further than I have. Then, they can provide even better for their kids, and so on.”

This is a very important exercise to do. The emotional “why” that we have deep within us is based on one of two things – the pleasure of attaining something, or the pain of losing something.

“Why do you want to get in shape?”

“I want to be healthier and live a healthier life and live longer.”

“I think that’s great and I agree. But why?”

“Well, when I have kids I want to be around and be able to keep up with them and be a good example to them.”

And it progresses. Do this with each of your goals/dreams/visions for the future. Identify exactly why it is you want what you do.

Our minds will remember more vividly those tasks which have emotions attached to them. This is why it was important to draw out all five senses in your future self .. And also why it is important to truly identify why you want what you do in your future.

Have fun!
