“If you want to build a ship, don’t herd people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery
“A leader will find it difficult to articulate a coherent vision unless it expresses his core values, his basic identity. One must first embark on the formidable journey of self-discovery in order to create a vision with authentic soul.” – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
In some area or another, in your life, you are a leader.
You may be the head of your household. You may manage individuals at work. At the end of the day, you have influence and leadership over these people. Even if you’re not in an “official” position of leadership, you may be surprised to see the influence you have over the people around you.
It’s an important thing to recognize, because with any level of leadership, comes a level of responsibility.
What does this have to do with vision? Well, where are you going? Because the people you lead are trailing behind you. You’re driving the ship. Where are you headed? Where do you want to go? How are you going to get there? What will it be like when you do get there?
Are you traveling solo, or leading a caravan? Think of a motorcycle. You can whip in and out of small places and generally travel faster, because it’s only you. Now think of a caravan. You know, that last road trip that you had your SUV full AND another one or two behind you full with friends or family. A rest stop becomes a much larger ordeal.
Maybe one would think, “traveling lighter and faster is more productive.” While in the time being, for the sole purpose, yes, it may be, but allow me to press in and show you another light here.
A good friend told me recently, “no one is an island.” We need other people. No great success (or happiness) was ever put together by one sole person. Even God is not solely God, He is the Godhead – three, in One. When we get to the destination where we see our deepest desires come to pass, they truly will include others.
No one makes it alone. No one is an island. So don’t travel like one. ❤
